What? Your say you’re not a professional bicycle mechanic! Well, regardless there are some simple, routine maintenance steps you should follow.
Check your tire pressure at least once a week. Tires will lose pressure even when your tubes are new. Keeping your tires properly inflated will help the bike handle better, keep you from possibly getting a pinch flat and make the bike easier to pedal.
If you have a bicycle that comes with quick release wheels, and you have to remove the wheel for any reason, you will want to check a couple things before riding down the road. You want to make sure that the wheel is centered in the frame or fork and securely in the wheel mount, called the drop out. The best way to make sure your wheel is in straight is to have the bike balanced up right, making sure the wheel is centered in the drop out before you clamp the quick release. Finally, make sure your brakes have been secured with a couple of pulls on the brake levers.
Try to listen to what your bicycle is telling you. Not literally of course, but listen for new noises, such as a clicking or creaking sound. Also, just before a ride, grab your front brake, if you have one, if not turn your front wheel to the left or right and rock the bike back and forth. If there is any type of a clunking sound your headset, or worse, your stem could be loose. If you’re not sure how to adjust this, bring it in right away. It can cause damage to the bicycle and worse, it could cause damage to you. Similarly you can grab the wheel of your bike and rock it side to side. The same with your pedal crank arm, grab it and try to see if there is excessive movement when pulling on them side to side. If ever in doubt give us a call or bring the bicycle to the store.
Keep those moving parts moving with the proper bicycle lubricant. You don't need to over do it though. Buy a proper lubricant and give your derailleur pivots an occasional drop or two, and most important, you're going to want to keep that chain lubed as well. Keeping on top of these simple things will keep your costs down and most important, keep you safe.
